Epiphany 2010
How does God work in the World?
The symbol of light captures the meaning of the term epiphany, "to show" or "to reveal." The day of Epiphany, January 6, commemorates the wise men bringing gifts to the Christ child, the first Gentiles to acknowledge Jesus as King. Their act of worship shows Jesus as "a light for revelation to the Gentiles." It was one of the first indications that Jesus came for all people, of all nations, and of all races. The season of Epiphany continues the theme of Christ’s light for the world from January 6 until the season of Lent.
This year we open the season of Epiphany with a Sunday dedicated to the annual theme chosen by Church Council: Reaching Out - Growing Stronger This annual theme builds on Isaiah 54:2: “Enlarge the site of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.”
The rest of the Sundays of Epiphany follow the theme, “How does God Work in the World?” This title comes from the first half of the study guide to the International Mennonite Brethren Confession of Faith, “Knowing & Living Your Faith” edited by Peter Klassen and Elmer Martens.
2010 is the 150th anniversary of the Mennonite Brethren Church. During Epiphany we highlight explanations of our faith written by Mennonite Brethren from around the world.
We celebrate together how God has allowed the MB church to participate in the reaching out and growing stronger of the kingdom of God.
