Fall Worship Series
Authentic Living
The Fall 2009 worship series follows the Lectionary, focusing on James in September, Job in October, and Psalms in November. Along the way, we will observe All Saints Day, and the last day of the church year, Christ the King Sunday.
Starting in September, we take our cues from Herb Kopp in his commentary of the Epistle of James, “Authentic Living.” It’s a very practical, ethical focus highlighting issues of discipleship that tie together our belief and life. The month ends on a rather upbeat note, “the key to wellness.”
What happens if we do our best to live according to these ethical guidelines and things don’t go right? For the month of October, the primary scriptures come from Job. After the practical focus of James, it might be easy to find a one-to-one relationship between our actions and outcomes. What if that doesn’t work? The Book of Job offers ways to think about this kind of questions and gives examples of typical human responses, finally recognizing God’s sovereign place in the world. “I knew of you then only by report, but now I see you with my own eyes. Therefore I yield, repenting in dust and ashes” (Job 42.5-6).
Having considered our actions in this world (September) and having recognized that Almighty God is sovereign (October), we celebrate during the month of November as we mark All Saints Day and Christ the King Sunday.
Please contact members of the Worship Commission if you would like additional resources for the study of the Epistle of James or the Book of Job. May God bless you in this season of worship.
